Compartment names are useful only when they describe physical boundaries and access conditions. Engineers must know which live parts are contained, how access is controlled and what remains energised when a cover or door is opened.

Functional compartments contain different hazards
Typical regions include busbars, switching devices, cables and low-voltage control equipment. Sensors, surge arresters and earthing switches may be located in different compartments depending on the design, so a generic panel sketch is insufficient.
Accessibility is a controlled condition
A compartment may require tools, an interlock or an operating procedure. These approaches are not equivalent. The product classification and manufacturer instructions define who may access it and under what electrical state.
Partitions define exposure, not only appearance
Metallic or insulating partitions and shutters limit contact with live parts and can support continuity during maintenance. Openings, pressure relief paths and removable interfaces must be included in the assessment.
Installation can invalidate an access assumption
Wall clearance, cable trench, rear aisle, pressure duct and building interfaces affect safe access. A panel tested for a particular side classification should not be installed in a different arrangement without assessment.
Engineering application method
- Step 1: Map every component to a physical compartment using the approved section drawing.
- Step 2: For each door or cover, record the access control and required equipment state.
- Step 3: Identify adjacent compartments that remain energised and the barriers protecting personnel.
- Step 4: Verify installation clearances, pressure relief and maintenance tasks against manufacturer instructions.
Practical example
Opening an LVC door may be permitted with the main circuit energised, while opening a cable-compartment door may require the feeder isolated, tested dead and earthed. Both doors are on the same panel but their hazards and access rules are entirely different.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every front door is safe to open energized.
- Using compartment names without section drawings.
- Ignoring rear or top pressure-relief space.
- Treating a removable cover as equivalent to an interlocked door.
