Treat configuration as controlled evidence
ICD, CID, SCD and settings files must have identifiable revisions. A passing test against an uncontrolled file does not establish the supplied system configuration.
Test semantics and behavior
A subscriber must receive the correct data object, state, quality and timing. Prove both assert and reset paths plus blocking, simulation and communication-failure responses.
Observe time and redundancy
Event analysis depends on synchronized clocks. Where redundant networks are specified, switchover and path-loss behavior must be tested without creating duplicate or missed actions.
Engineering application method
- Step 1: Freeze the SCD/CID files, network architecture, VLANs, priorities and time source.
- Step 2: Verify IED names, datasets, control blocks and subscriber mappings against the signal list.
- Step 3: Test GOOSE assert, reset, quality, simulation and loss-of-message behavior.
- Step 4: Verify reports, commands and server-client data where in FAT scope.
- Step 5: Check time synchronization accuracy and sequence-of-events alignment.
- Step 6: Capture configuration hashes, packet traces, IED events and final restored states.
Practical example
For a GOOSE intertrip, toggle the publishing IED input, confirm the correct data object and state number, measure subscriber response, then interrupt the network path to verify the specified supervision alarm and fail-safe behavior.
Common mistakes
- Accepting ping tests as functional IEC 61850 evidence.
- Testing only message assertion and not reset.
- Ignoring quality, simulation and configuration revision.
- Leaving temporary datasets or test flags in service.
