Paint, grease and wear can interrupt continuity. Flexible straps or designed contacts are used where moving parts require bonding.

DIN rails need a defined status

Some terminals bond through the rail; other rails are isolated. The design must not assume a protective path through unverified mounting hardware.

Multiple signal earths can create loops

Analogue and communication circuits require an intentional topology based on the equipment instructions and EMC design.

Engineering application method

  1. Step 1: Separate PE and functional-earth requirements on drawings.
  2. Step 2: Trace protective paths to the main earth bar.
  3. Step 3: Specify door, rail and gland-plate bonds.
  4. Step 4: Define shield and signal reference topology.
  5. Step 5: Measure continuity and inspect connections during FAT.

Practical example

A door-mounted relay may have a functional-earth terminal and the door may have a PE braid. Joining only the relay terminal to the door does not replace the protective bond.

Common mistakes

  • Using cable screens as PE.
  • Relying on hinges.
  • Assuming every DIN rail is earthed.
  • Creating multiple analogue earths.
  • Hiding bonds behind paint.

Design and review checklist

  • Can protective fault current reach the earth bar?
  • Are moving parts bonded?
  • Is functional earth separate in purpose?
  • Are rails and plates intentionally connected?
  • Are screen paths documented?
