  2. Step 2: Create physical and logical network diagrams.
  3. Step 3: Select redundancy and switch supervision.
  4. Step 4: Define SNTP or PTP architecture and accuracy.
  5. Step 5: Test failover, congestion, clock loss and restoration.

Practical example

Two event records with timestamps 4 ms apart cannot be ordered confidently if one relay has lost synchronization and is free-running. Time-quality status is part of the evidence.

Common mistakes

  • Using one flat VLAN for everything.
  • Selecting ring protocol without IED support.
  • Confusing network redundancy with clock redundancy.
  • Ignoring multicast load.
  • Not alarming time loss.

  • Are traffic classes separated?
  • Is redundancy compatible end to end?
  • What accuracy is required?
  • Are switches and clocks supervised?
  • Are failure and restoration tests defined?
