Trip-circuit supervision detects loss of the electrical path needed to open a breaker. It monitors a circuit condition; it does not prove that the mechanism will move or that the breaker can interrupt current.

Core engineering principles
The supervised path must be drawn explicitly
Battery, fuse or MCB, relay contact, test switch, wiring, auxiliary contact and trip coil may all belong to the path. A monitor connected around only part of it gives partial coverage.
Breaker position changes continuity
52a and 52b contacts route supervision differently when the breaker is closed or open. One-state schemes can leave latent faults undetected in the other state.
Monitor current must remain below coil pickup
Supervision injects a small current through the trip circuit. Resistor values, relay input and coil characteristics must prevent unintended operation while providing reliable detection.
Dual trip coils need separate supervision
Two coils or DC systems should be monitored independently where redundancy is claimed. A common alarm should still identify which channel failed.
TCM is the formal acronym in IEEE C37.2
Project labels such as TCS are widespread, but fixed device numbers 95 or 96 should not be invented as universal trip-circuit functions.
Engineering application method
- Step 1: Draw the complete trip path for open and closed states.
- Step 2: Define which failures must be detected.
- Step 3: Calculate supervision current for minimum and maximum DC voltage.
- Step 4: Set alarm delay to ride through normal trip transitions.
- Step 5: Test open/closed breaker, fuse loss, wire break and coil disconnection.
Practical example
A closed-state-only scheme can supervise the working trip path during service but lose coverage after the breaker opens for maintenance. If project risk requires both states, 52b routing or an equivalent method is needed.
Common mistakes
- Claiming mechanism supervision from TCS.
- Monitoring only the relay output contact.
- Using excessive supervision current.
- Applying 95 as a universal TCS device number.
- Combining two trip channels into one undifferentiated alarm.

- Which circuit sections are covered?
- Is supervision active open and closed?
- Is monitor current safely below pickup?
- Are both trip coils independent?
- Are alarm delay and test method defined?
